Maysville, Kentucky has one of the most well-preserved historic downtowns in the region. The city’s Main Street district, anchored by 19th-century architecture and a riverfront setting on the Ohio, draws visitors and residents who expect the streetscape to match the character of the place.

The problem was familiar: standard galvanized sign posts. Functional, yes. But visually out of place against the brick facades and period storefronts that define downtown Maysville.

The Maysville Main Street program turned to Pole Covers in 2025, starting with a single unit to evaluate the product firsthand. After seeing the result, the city ordered 20 more.

Before & After

Before Pole Cover
After Pole Cover

What Maysville selected: The Spartan decorative pole cover, installed on existing U-channel sign posts throughout the historic district. No digging, no replacement hardware, no disruption to traffic or signage. Installation took minutes per pole.

“Maysville has had a great experience with Pole Covers. Our historic downtown dates back to the late 1700’s, and we try to keep things as aesthetically pleasant as possible. But we still need directional and safety signage. I was thrilled to find a product to make those necessary poles more attractive. Assembly is really easy and, after 18 months, they still look like great. The team at Pole Covers is also 5-star! They could not be more helpful, patient and responsive. If you want to give your town a more polished look, do not hesitate to try these!”
— Caroline Reece, Maysville Main Street

The result: 21 units installed across Maysville’s downtown corridor. The Spartan’s black finish complements the historic architecture without competing with it; a clean, consistent look that requires zero maintenance and no repainting.

Why it works for historic districts: Many Main Street programs and downtown development organizations face the same tension: the infrastructure is utilitarian, the surroundings are not. Replacing poles entirely means permits, crew time, and cost that most budgets can’t justify. Pole Covers snap around existing posts in minutes, preserve the breakaway safety function, and hold up to Kentucky’s weather without fading.

Maysville joins a growing list of cities across Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Ohio Valley, as well as nationally including McAllen TX, Owatonna MN, and St Pete Beach FL , that have used Pole Covers to improve their streetscapes without a capital project.
