Components
A fully assembled Model #0100 cover consists of 16 molded HDPE segments and 10 rubber shims, stacked and snapped to the scheduled height. Segments join with a 4-tine vertical button snap and matching receiving hole. All segments include a set-screw hole.

Part 1: General
1.1 Summary
- Section includes decorative snap-on covers installed over existing, structurally sound sign posts and small poles to upgrade appearance without removing or replacing the host post.
- Related requirements: Section 10 14 00 Signage; Section 26 56 00 Exterior Lighting; Section 32 17 00 Paving Specialties (existing post foundations).
1.2 References
- ASTM D256 (Izod impact), D638 (tensile), D746 (brittleness temperature), D1693 (environmental stress-cracking), and G154 (UV exposure), as applicable to the cover material.
- FHWA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), where covers are installed on posts within the clear zone or supporting regulatory or warning signs.
List only the references actually cited in the edited section. The manufacturer’s standard product is a decorative, non-structural cover. Do not impose structural or breakaway test standards on the cover itself; where the host post supports traffic signs, breakaway and clear-zone compliance remain a property of the host post and its foundation.
1.3 Submittals
- Product data: manufacturer’s data sheets for each product, including materials, dimensions, component list, temperature range, finish, and installation instructions.
- Shop drawings: elevation of the assembled cover showing overall height, base dimension, segment stack for the scheduled post heights, and set-screw locations.
- Samples: one full assembled cover for each post type scheduled, for verification of fit and finish; returnable and may be installed in the Work if undamaged. [One 12 in. segment sample in the specified color.]
- Manufacturer’s instructions: printed installation instructions, including snap engagement, optional set-screw use, and disassembly.
- Closeout submittals: manufacturer’s warranty and maintenance instructions.
1.4 Quality assurance
- Manufacturer qualifications: company specializing in decorative post and pole covers with the specified product in regular production and available from a single source.
- Single-source responsibility: obtain covers, shims, set screws, and accessories from one manufacturer.
- Mockup: install one assembled cover on an actual scheduled post at a location directed by the Architect; accepted mockup may remain as part of the Work.
1.5 Delivery, storage, and handling
- Deliver components in the manufacturer’s original packaging with labels intact.
- Store components indoors or under cover, laid flat or nested, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, until installation.
- Handle to prevent gouging, scratching, or distortion of exposed surfaces.
1.6 Field conditions
- Do not install covers on posts that are leaning, loose in the foundation, corroded through section, or otherwise not structurally sound. Report such posts to the Owner before proceeding.
- Install covers when the ambient temperature is within the manufacturer’s recommended installation range.
1.7 Warranty
- Manufacturer’s warranty: manufacturer’s standard limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for five (5) years from the date of Substantial Completion.

2.1 Manufacturers

2.2 Performance / design criteria
- Host post compatibility: round, square, or U-channel; 1 in. (25 mm) minimum to 3 in. (76 mm) nominal diameter or width; center aperture 3 in. round or 3-1/8 in. U-channel.
- Assembled cover: maximum height 90 in. (2286 mm); maximum base width 18 in. (457 mm); assembled weight approximately 12 lb (5.4 kg).
- Service temperature range: minus 50 deg F (minus 46 deg C) to 180 deg F (82 deg C).
- Attachment: cover shall be self-supporting on the host post through interlocking snap engagement between segments; cover shall not require attachment to the ground, footing, or foundation.
- Impact: cover material shall be impact- and shatter-resistant across the full service temperature range, including cold-weather installation, without cracking at the snap tabs.
- UV resistance: all components shall be UV-stabilized for exterior service.
2.3 Materials
- Cover segments: UV-stabilized high-density polyethylene (HDPE), PPC-0520UR BK2073 grade, or the manufacturer’s current equivalent production resin; nominal wall thickness 0.125 in. (3.2 mm), nominal base wall thickness 0.2 in. (5.1 mm). This grade is the upgraded formulation for added flexibility and cold-weather crack resistance at the snap tabs.
- Shims: molded rubber shims for host-post size take-up, as supplied by the manufacturer.
- Set screws (optional, where indicated): 5/16 in., 18-8 stainless steel, flat-head sheet-metal screws.
2.4 Components
- A fully assembled Model #0100 cover consists of 16 molded HDPE segments and 10 rubber shims (parts 0101 through 0106; see the Components table above), stacked and snapped to the scheduled height.
- Segments join with a 4-tine vertical button snap and matching receiving hole. All segments include a set-screw hole.
- The base is dimensioned to clear a 12 in. (300 mm) square or 9 in. (230 mm) triangular post mounting bracket.
- Provide the segment count and mix required to reach the scheduled cover height for each post; coordinate with the manufacturer.
2.5 Finishes
- Standard color: black.
- Custom color: available as a special-order item, generally requiring a minimum order of 100 units. Do not specify a custom color for smaller quantities without written confirmation of feasibility from the manufacturer.
- Retroreflective option: retroreflective flake may be added for night visibility where indicated; confirm color and availability with the manufacturer.

2.6 Accessories
- Set screws: as specified in 2.3, where the drawings indicate additional mechanical retention (for example, high-traffic pedestrian areas or posts subject to tampering).
- Custom embossing or logo imprint: where indicated; coordinate artwork and feasibility with the manufacturer.
Part 3: Execution
3.1 Examination
- Verify that host posts are plumb, secure in their foundations, and sound.
- Verify that host post size and cross-section are within the range specified in 2.2.
- Verify that installation of the cover will not obstruct sign faces, luminaires, pedestrian signal equipment, or other functional elements on the post.
- Do not begin installation until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
3.2 Preparation
- Clean loose rust, dirt, and debris from the host post over the covered length.
- Select and place rubber shims as required to center the cover on the host post and take up the gap between post and cover.
3.3 Installation
- Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s written instructions.
- Assemble cover segments around the host post from the base upward, engaging all button snaps until fully seated. Stack spacers and middle segments to reach the scheduled height, finishing with the top segment.
- Where indicated, install stainless steel set screws in the provided set-screw holes for additional retention.
- Where the host post is held by a 12 in. square or 9 in. triangular ground bracket, align the cover base with the bracket.
- Set the assembled cover so the base sits level and in even contact with the surrounding grade or paving.
3.4 Field quality control
- Verify that all button snaps are fully engaged and no segment is loose.
- Verify that the cover is plumb, the base is level, and the cover does not impede any functional element of the post.
3.5 Adjusting and cleaning
- Re-seat any segment that has loosened.
- Clean exposed surfaces with mild detergent and water; rinse and air dry. Paint thinner may be used to remove spray paint or marker.
3.6 Protection
- Protect installed covers from damage by other trades until Substantial Completion.
- Replace segments that are cracked, gouged, or permanently distorted with new segments from the manufacturer.
